How do the discussions of our group align with Mission and Vision of SDA? -We should be using data to make decisions in our work. -We need to include a rationale for the decisions we make, to include AQuESTT and the information from the EBA. -as a bucket group: plan, do, review...we need to follow a problem solving continuous improvement process -need a levels of implementation...what did schools and ESU’s do with what they learned? -possibly share during PDO (Unconference?) or another avenue where people can share what they’ve done in regards to training -we need to be more purposeful about discussing how things are going in different districts -look at EBA’s, recommend, look at EBA’s again...constant source of updated data
The group discussed the content of the upcoming workshop that will be conducted by Cassie Erkins. Kate and Amy will have a conference call with Cassie on May 15th and recommend the following topics be included in the training:
Strategies for teachers. How can you use formative assessment data to drive instruction?
How much is too much and how much is not enough?
How do we determine if it is valid? (6 Quality Indicators)
Do you grade formative assessments?
What does formative assessment look like?
How do these assessments connect to the Marzano and Danielson evaluations models?
Is there a book to go along with this training?
Can Cassie help SDA develop modules for a formative assessment training via DL? (this could possibly be done in April)
Is okay to record the presentation so participants have the option to rewatch parts of it at at other times?
Kate and Amy will use the information that is gathered from Cassie to create a 2 day agenda and promotional flyer. This flyer will be emailed to all group members for approval by July. Registration will be opened to other PDO affiliates. If space is available, ESUs will be allowed to invite school personnel. Maximum attendance is 78.
Sheree, Julie and Sara will create a survey that will be given to participants at the conclusion of the workshop in order to determine follow-up needs.
The Assessment Bucket and the Curriculum Bucket Groups met together. The following people were present:
Kate Hatch, Amy Hill, Kristi Stewart, Dianah Steinbrink, Emily Jameson, Cheryl Roche, Barb Friesth, Lenny VerMaas, Marci Ostmeyer, Jadie Beam, Sara Zabrowski, Julie Downing, Teresa Osborn.
Feedback notes were reviewed regarding suggestions on how to continue the work from the Rigorous Curriculum Design training. Questions and discussion included:
Leadership structures needed to put curriculum into the calendar and give teachers time during the professional work time at the school.
What time do we have to work with, and how can we put it into the scheduled time they have available? Full day to work with curriculum, 1-2 hours, multiple days?
Pacing guide for developing curriculum – what does it look like if they meet once a month, once a week, 2x a year. Provide 4 choices of what the curriculum work will look like.
What are schools and ESU's currently using? ESU 6 – schools track information and at end of year evaluate where changes need to be made. ESU 1 uses online BYOC: Build Your Own Curriculum. ESU 10 - resources they have created.
Would like to coordinate a statewide collaborative template and process that can be used with schools with or without staff developer assistance. Kristi S. will create a google folder for SDA Curriculum Design to post different templates, resources that we can post and access.
November 2015 Cassie Erkens training focus:
What is good formative assessment and how do you develop that with teachers? Provide suggestions on how to develop common formative assessments, work with different size groups of teachers, including single teachers, to develop assessment. How can we help teachers see that formative assessment is not the chapter test in the book and how to take it to the standard level and make it a standards based assessment. What is the recipe for adding grade above and grade below items to reinforce, introduce, master. How to use assessments to make better instructional decisions and guidance on how long a formative assmt should be, # of questions, what kinds of questions, how to figure out rigor, etc.
Kate Hatch and Amy Hill will contact Cassie Erkens and communicate our training wants/needs.
The Assessment Bucket and the Curriculum Bucket Groups met together. The following people were present: Julie D., Marci O., Sara Z., Jadie B., Kathy V., Marilou J., Heidi R., Sheree P., Kristi S., Lenny V., Diannah S., Barb F., Emily J., Amy H., Kate H.
A discussion regarding what we felt was needed after the RCD training was held. The group determined that they would like a training on formative assessment in 2015. A discussion regarding potential facilitators for this training was held. The following comments were recorded:
Emily J. has attended the Leadership and Learn seminar several years ago. This training has characteristics of strong assessment and is tied into the process that we will be learning during the RCD training in November 2014. It helps teachers analyze the quality of assessment items and matches rigor of items to standards. We would need to make sure that we are able to utilize the materials that we get from this training with our districts. Some companies aren’t as willing to do this unless extensive training with their products occur.
Sheree informed us of the following potential resource: Recorded Webinars for Formative Assessment on NWEA site. (Knowledge Academy)
Other group members suggested the following possibilities:
Assessment Training Institute/Solution Tree (Stiggins)
Dillon William
Cassie Erkins (Solution Tree)
Jim Popham
Julie D. stated that it would be most beneficial to have the Marzano/Danielson Models taken into account when someone is selected so statewide initiatives are connected to this training.
After professional discussions were held, it was determined that it would be best to select a speaker that would customize a training to best meet the needs of our group and the districts in our state.
The group decided to contact Leadership and Learn and Cassie Erkens from Solution Tree and gather the following information: availability, cost, tailoring workshop to meet the needs of SDA. Sheree P., Marilou J., and Barb F. will gather the information. This information will then be shared via email with all Bucket Group members and discussed at the November Strategist meeting.

Alignment of Common Core to NE State Assessments
LA Standards – Partial alignment of some standards
Math Standards – at the secondary level there is less alignment. One big difference is the inclusion of Algebra I in the 8th grade CCSS.
Some states are backing off of CCSS because of costs associated with the assessment
We need to stay updated with the most current information regarding the CCSS
Textbooks companies are aligning their materials to the CCSS.

Reviewed the 2012 Needs Assessment priorities. Discussed C4L and how it is beneficial to have access as an ESU. We felt C4L, Interim, and Formative Assessment all fell under the same umbrella.
Discussion pertaining to Proficiency Scales training for April 2014. This fits with the work that is being done in Teacher/Principal Evaluation, and ties into formative and individual student assessment. It would be helpful to create a system of how to develop the proficiency scales that can be used consistently across the state. Having a bank of proficiency scales, similar to the C4L system, for each grade/subject that can be accessed by any educator across the state. TAG could help to determine or create the best system for this.
We also discussed Cassie Erkens of Solution Tree, McREL, and Larry Ainsworth (Leadership & Learning Center).
If Common Core training is needed, there is a possibility it could occur on ESUPDO dates.
We also created an evaluation survey for the NWEA MAP training that trainers across the state can use. A MAP Resources wiki has been created, and content needs to be added. NWEA MAP Training Evaluation

NWEA MAP: ESUCC is handling the contract and training arrangements for the Certified Trainer Program. There may be needs this group can assist with once the CTP has occurred.
Grading, Reporting and Formative Assessment:
ESU 4 is working with schools to develop grading scales, using "A Repair Kit for Grading: 15 Fixes for Broken Grades" by Ken O'Connor. Schools are developing grading and learning goals (also fits with Marzano grading scales).
Scottsbluff, Chadron, and another ESU 13 school are using standards based report cards at K-6.
ESU 10 has two schools that are working on grading. Lexington MS has implemented a data team approach, and giving no zeros. They have brainstormed different strategies for kids and would be a good source of information for schools who are beginning to implement. They are also working on common formative assessments and a consultant works with them once a month providing feedback. They have trained all staff and are working with Leadership and Learning (Doug Reeves' group). Emily attends every Friday at the middle school and Cindy Baum attends at the high school.
Formative Assessment for Math: An RtI math group has been formed by SDA members. A statewide training by Dr. Erica Lembke on "Using the RTI Process in Mathematics: K-6" will be held at 4 locations this fall. The RtI math group may address this area.
C4L: MOU's from school districts are due to NDE by May 31st. NDE has established training dates for new schools, and dates this fall to review submitted items.
NeSA: NDE is receiving public feedback on the Social Studies standards draft. Nebraska Reading Standards review will likely begin next year and will consider looking at the Common Core Standards. Dr. Valerie Foy will be replacing Pat Roschewski as leader of the NDE assessment team July 1st. Jeremy Heneger will be Assistant Director.
Presenter Possibilities:
The Leadership and Learning Center can provide training: Overview of Common Core, Priority standards, Unwrapping standards, Common formative assessment (pre- and post-), Data teams.

Rachel Syria (working with Lexington Elem)
Superintendent from Kentucky (working with Lexington HS)
Marzano Scales: Margaret McInteer and Mitzi Hoback
Ken O'Connor (Grading): Has presented at Norfolk (ESU 1, 2, 7 & 8), ESU 3, ESU 13
